The Best of Eight Mile Plains

About Eight Mile Plains

A residential and industrial suburb

The outer southern suburb of Eight Mile Plains is located approximately 15 kilometres south east of the Brisbane CBD. The suburb covers an approximate area of 7.8 squared kilometres. Bulimba Creek forms the north and western suburb boundary, while the Pacific Motorway runs along the south east boundary and the Gateway Motorway runs along the north eastern suburb boundary.

Eight Mile Plains received its name during its early settlement. It is believed to be named after the distance (eight miles or thirteen kilometres) from One Mile Swamp, now known as Woolloongabba, as well as the areas flat topography. In 1864, the Eight Mile Plains Agricultural Reserve was declared and subdivided into about one hundred allotments. It was a part of the larger Brisbane Agricultural Reserve and encompassed the current suburbs of Kuraby, Sunnybank, Sunnybank Hills, Eight Mile Plains, Runcorn, and parts of Algester, Stretton, and Coopers Plains.

In 1863, a man named Charles Baker bought land in Eight Mile Plains, and in 1865, he received a publican’s licence for Baker’s Hotel. The licence was then taken over by Joseph Baker in 1869 who then changed its name to Eight Mile Plains Hotel.

Once again the hotel was taken over in 1927 by two Scottish women and its name was changed to The Glen, which is what it is known as today. These new owners introduced wood chopping competitions at the hotel which attracted big crowds. This increase in interest led to the formation of the Queensland Axeman’s Association who, today, continues to hold wood chopping competitions across the state. They also have teams which compete in national and international events. The Glen Hotel is one of the longest continuously trading hotels in the state of Queensland. Many developments continued to happen, including the opening of schools and churches as well as residential estates, all pushing an increase in the suburb’s population.
